I watched the clip repeatedly, (and I used to box on a team).
What causes a knockout (usually) is the suddeness of the heads movement being faster that the brain can move with it.
THis is why the tip of the chin yields so many KO’s. The chin is as far out on the end of the lever as you can get. Therefore it yields higher G force to the brain when a right cross hits it. When the fighter is in the fight he is fully tensed up and his neck muscles act as dampers to slow and absorb the snap.
When this guy got nailed he was way relaxed. Watch the clip and pause it throughout the swing. Notice there is nothing to indicate he saw it coming. Not even a quiver from the muscles in his neck or face.
Also note the body movement when he goes down. It is very common for someone clocked like this to reach up kind of stiff armed with one or both arms. It’s like they are trying to hold onto consciousness.
Now what I can’t say is whether or not he could have shaken it off and continued. He would have been foolish to do so, of that I am sure.

The thing is even if Nakao was showing unsportsmanship like behavior before the fight was to begin thats something totally seperate, but it is not at all dismissable to say he should have lost or been shamed for it. Many fighters are unsportsman-like, before and after the match. That does not say that they for instance are not great at what they do. Tito Ortiz for example used to wear clothing that insulted his recently defeated opponents after a bout. This is not to say that he wasnt a great martial artist and fighter, but rather that he was unsportsman in his behavior. Some find his behavior amusing while others dont, but he still kicks ass. The thing some of the people here seem to find unbearable is that there were sexual connotations between them, which was undoubtedly not the intention of the whole thing. Herring deserved the DQ, and if nakao is discredited, you should discredit every one of our beloved athletes that is unsportsman in any aspect.
And in any case, I think I think Herring still would have won.

Wow, white supremacists still exist? I guess they never heard of evolution. I have never been confronted with racial stuff in my life, only on the computer I see the racists come out the woodworks. Big balls you guys have. Me being hispanic and a MMA, I respect the Asian culture to the fullest. Racism and Homophobia has no place in MMA. MMA is all about respect for the art. You have to put all the politics and shit out that window. Interesting points you make, however contradictory they may be. Racism and homophobia have no place in MMA? Right, but you cant draw the line there. Just sexuality in general has no place in MMA, let alone homosexuality. MMA is mixed martial arts right? its not a game of who can do the stupidest or gayest shit to piss their opponent off before the fight. Respect for the art and your opponent should always be on top. You shake the mans hand before the fight, and you shake his hand after the fight. The truly great athletes are the ones who can keep their emotions under wraps and keep their cool in the ring. Herring should have just taken the kiss, wait for the match to start, then knocked Nakao’s stupid ass out, shook his hand, and walked out of the ring without saying a word.

Nakao new he was gonna get beaten - he planned it from the start. He definitely took a dive and was hoping for a DQ. I think he has an unbeaten record (I’m not sure if he lost to Bob Sapp). I’m sure Bob Sapp hit him harder than that punch anyway!

There is always a line between what is a joke and what is harrassment. Had Herring been a woman, Nakao’s actions would have been considered sexual assault in the courts. Had that woman slapped him, it would have been considered self-defense.
For some reason, people seem to think that it’s okay for men to sexually assault other men. Worse yet, if you react in an emotional manner to such an assault, you’re not only considered wrong, but “homophobic”, and some how a closet homosexual yourself. This is the same mentality as, “Any girl who says ‘No’ must be a dyke.”
Nakao’s actions tarnished Herring’s honor in front of millions of viewers. Simply going along with the fight or complaining and requesting a DQ would not have re-established face. Those who consider him unprofessional do not see the big picture. This is a spectator sport. Herring has bolstered his image, despite what the pacifists say. More money in his pocket in the future.
