Business Casual

Apparently it’s an oxymoron. Doesn’t help me much in getting ready to start work tomorrow.

I Got the Job

Well that didn’t take long..

First interview in after graduating and I got hired at the place I really wanted to work! Great stuff but I don’t think it has sunk in yet. I am gonna be based in Birmingham which is awesome as I really wanted to stay in the city and walk to work which should be possible flat permitting.

Job doesn’t start till next month so I still get my summer break also! I better start flat hunting, ping me a mail or comment if you have anywhere in the city or are looking also.

Wooo!

Crazy Fines from Unite

I’ve uploaded scans (click the thumbnails below) of the document Unite uses to base it’s fines on once people check out of their flats. I got charged for deep cleaning the bathroom (¬£12) and cleaning the fridge/freezer (¬£15) the later of which is ridiculous because they sent a whole team of Polish dudes in to clean it during the last week.

More funny though are the other charges. Apparently a crappy chest of drawers is worth ¬£140 and a chair that wouldn’t look out of place in a scrap yard is worth ¬£85. There are plenty of amusing ones on there so take a look below.

IT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR FROM MY OLD FLATMATES ON THIS ONE. PLEASE COMMENT.

**Fixed** Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT Video Hardware Overlay Problem

UPDATE (6/7/06@2:10am)

Holy crap I finally fixed it! If you are having this issue on the Extreme Edition XFX cards or any other manufacturer OC’d card just underclock it to 450Mhz on the core and 600Mhz on the memory. If you can’t see the frequency settings in your control panel you need to download the CoolBits registry hack to make it appear. I literally just got this working so I need to tweak it some more but it seems to be an issue that can be fixed by future driver updates. So until the next version comes out we will have to run with slower cores.

I’m just so damn happy I don’t have to RMA right now :-).

END OF UPDATE

Been a bit busy as of late working (Java part time) and building PCs. Got all my components together over the weeknd and had a whale of a time trying to get it to work. Suffice to say, 2 power supplies later and trying every different RAM combination under the sun and it now works. For the record if your getting random hard resets it’s either you power supply or in my case the RAM isn’t in the right slots. It just so happens on this motherboard the first two slots were screwed but the second were fine. Shame it took me two days to figure that out - natch.

I am very happy with the system apart from one issue which is driving me nuts. For some bizzare reason I cannot for the life of me get hardware overlay on my graphics card to work. I am running a GeForce 7900 GT with the AM2 4000 X2 chip on an Asus M2N32 mobo.

I am using the latest 91.31 ForceWare drivers and have even reninstalled Windows from scratch a few times to see if I had installed something which broke it and as it turns out I did not. So right now all videos are playing back under software mode which means horiztonal tearing and no DigiTV at all which is my biggest gripe.

I have searched high and low and no one seems to have a fix for this. As such theres another £20 bounty on this one.

I want my overlay back dammit!

Find me a AMD Athlon 64 4000 X2 AM2 earn £20.

Title says it all really. £20 to the first person who can find me an AMD Athlon 64 4000 X2 AM2 in stock and for sale in the UK (or available in the UK).

I need this chip - I have been searching for weeks and it’s driving me mad.

The winner can expect full payment via paypal.

UPDATE: COMPETITION CLOSED!

Lowestonweb have just got some in. Go get em here people. Mine is on its way.

QA/Games Testing Jobs

I am looking for QA and games testing jobs right now. If you are hiring (especially in the Midlands) or know anyone who is can you please contact me via this website. Thanks!

4.1GHz for £75

A few weeks ago I found out about this article that claims a Pentium D 805 can be overclocked to 4.1GHz (3.6GHz realistically). This is a really attractive proposition for me as I am about to upgrade (what Oblivion needs, Oblivion gets) so it would be damn cheap if I could get the performance I need this way.

I’ll find out if its workable pretty soon as we have the components needed sitting in the flat waiting to be built for someone else’s system. If all goes well I will be seriously considering it over the new AM2 chips that are out on Tuesday which I had originally planned on going for. Either way I’ll write it up here once I know how far we can push this chip.

Update

hyperbolicAll quiet on the blogging front recently, hyperbolic geometry is keeping me busy. Once I finish my dissertation it’s straight into exams for a couple of weeks until I pop out a free man on the 16th May.

That will be interesting. I’ll be unemployed!

Oh and my fandabby hyperbolic tree whatsomograph will be open sourced and put on the site once it’s all signed off and the code is frozen. In the mean time this should keep you entertained for all of 30 seconds.
