So I Bought a DS

DS Lite BlueI had been putting it off for ages but this week I finally caved and ordered a blue one from Hong Kong. The combination of an excellent library of games, the beautiful design of the lite and the expanding homebrew community finally tipped me over the edge.

Nothing like a bit of Elite Beat Agents followed by Sam and Max emulated in ScummVM. Agents are go!

Supreme Commander: Technical Accomplishments and Performance

SupCom eats multi core processors for breakfast. That’s a fact. But I will say those who experienced poor performance in the demo might want to see the difference in the retail release. While I can play for a long time with little or no slow down on some maps, the mission provided in the demo still runs like a dog in the full game. For me it’s the worst performing part of the entire game and as such it seems rather strange it was chosen as the demo level. It could be the textures, it could be off screen units, either way it’s not the best example of how most of the campaign performs.

Once you have the hardware in the place with everything working correctly you start to realise that the engine and technology behind the game is a significant technical accomplishment. The seamless transition between close quarters battles and the over head tactical map by just flicking the mouse wheel is incredible. This must have been one of the biggest challenges to get working and I can’t see this feature appearing in other games anytime soon.

Supreme Commander Monkey Lord

This broadening of scale allows units to be vastly different in size. Tanks can roll underneath giant spider-like-bots while planes fly overhead and huge aircraft carriers float off shore. When these units open fire each bullet, laser or missile is modelled with full physics so if you have a mountain or unit in the way of your target don’t expect to automatically hit it or take no casualties of your own.

The tactical overlay helps manage all this. By just pressing the shift key patrol routes can be extended, build orders queued up or coordinated attacks can be scheduled. Add the simple and highly useful ferry ability of transport ships to the mix and even the largest maps can be tamed.

The engine is also highly flexible in the way in which you view the battlefield and allows multiple views per player. So I can have two monitors with two different views or even one monitor with the screen split in half. Heck even the mini map in the corner of the screen is a view port on the world which can be zoomed in on. Incredible.

I see SupCom as a long term investment. As new processors come out with more and more cores this game will look better and better. The developers are also keen to foster a mod community and already have a great online infrastructure set up with GPGNet that has many of the features of services such as Xbox Live (buddy lists, chat, rankings, clans, leader boards, etc).

It’s outstanding technical accomplishment right now with huge prospects for the future.

Pride 33 - A Night of Upsets

This was one crazy but great show. Major upsets across the board and pro-wrestling style booking during the show made this one to remember. The constant jabs at the UFC came off as cheap and considerable damage has been done to the potential Liddell vs Silva fight now. From the pre match footage it was clear they were trying to prove that Silva is better than Rampage, Rampage is better than Liddell and therefore Silva would beat Chuck. Scratch that then.

Gomi was once again calling out GSP, Hughes and BJ Penn. Then he stepped into the ring, gassed in the first round and got choked out in the second. An amazing match (fight of the year so far) but Gomi needs to start actually training for fights before he even thinks of going 5 rounds with GSP.

Pride might be dying but this was a highly entertaining show that I recommend checking out for the main events at least.

We’re Goin’ To The UFC!

The tickets have been booked, Manchester is the place, April 21st is the date, now we must wait. Welcome to England Mirko Cro Cop may you kick the piss out of all who stand in your way.

There is something about the no holds barred hate towards the PS3 over at UK:RESISTANCE that just warms the cockles of my heart. A fine fine website.

Supreme Commander: A Game for the Ages

What’s not to love about this game? Like Total Annihilation did back in 1997 it completely renews the RTS genre once more and takes it in a totally different direction to anything else on the market or currently in development. As we have seen with other genres, games are splitting up into distinctly different sub-genres and now it’s the turn of the RTS. Games such as Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander while both RTSs take radically different approaches to the fundamentals of the genre.

SupCom

Total Annihilation was a game I played for at least 3 years after release and up until the relatively recent releases of Dawn of War and Company of Heroes I felt the RTS hadn’t moved beyond it. This week it has taken a massive bound due to the vision of Chris Taylor and remnants of Cavedog. I really do not feel I can do the game justice in a single post here today so as I play through more of the campaign and experiment with the multiplayer I will record my thoughts. I urge you all to spend some time this week digging into ‘SupCom’ because this kind of thing only comes round once every 10 years.

Games sell in January! Shock!

If you release them, we will buy them. Simple.

Things I Have Been Doing this Weekend

  • Fixing python RSS scripts to work with the ‘new and improved’ F4WOnline.com. No Bryan I don’t like the new design.
  • Going back to XNA but now in Vista (thanks Dave). Here is a screen shot of a space ship in space in 3D. Yes.
  • Playing the latest episode of Sam and Max
  • Watching Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe. Great great great TV show about TV. Mondays 10pm BBC 4, you will love it.
  • Remembering the music from Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe is also in the movie 28 Days Later which I have just realised has an amazing soundtrack in addition to being an awesome movie. I need this in HD.
  • Cackling manically as my dual core CPU bails under the strain of the Supreme Commander demo. This one is a beast folks and the first barrage of many that will force us all to upgrade our PCs in 2007. Even those of us who did so less than a year ago. Damn.
  • Wondering why the hell I pay for PC Gamer if all the articles are just going to wind up online from now on.

UFC 67: A New Look For a New Year

Finally with the move to HD and at the first PPV of 2007 the UFC updated their presentation of the show. At UFC 67 were treated to new snazzy graphics all round with sound effects thrown in for the fun of it. This is a good move and the investment was sorely needed after years and years of the same stuff on PPV and TV.

Although I didn’t watch the show in HD initially I did manage to catch a couple of the fights in High Def the following day. Just check out the crispyness of these caps:

Democracy Player Now Works in Windows Vista

Another piece of the puzzle comes into place. Democracy Player 0.9.5 RC0 works nicely with Vista!
