I have heard many people on the interweb praise this week’s episode of Prison Break but to me it was just darn right wacky.
Following on from a strong season opener last week the show seemed to lose itself all of a sudden and turned into one hilarious moment after another. One thing that was driving me nuts was the way our escaped convicts, America’s 8 most wanted men no less, enjoyed making plenty of eye contact with the general public and acting all paranoid. Link stupidly eyeing up women and Eminem Junior overacting like a deer in headlights on crack and crystal meth were just some of the highlights.

Then we had the ‘daring’ rescue into a court house for Link’s son which involved little more than spraying a water pistol black and trying to nab him in an elevator. Surely the actors must have realised how ridiculous this scene was while filming it. Of course the escape was equally ridiculous as Michael and Link sped away in some run down truck while being shot at by Chicago’s finest.
I could continue to go on about the Indian-vet-leathal-injection scene but I won’t. I accept that with the first season a lot of it had to be taken with a pinch of salt but it was still set in a believable world in which actions had realistic consequences and characters acted naturally. This has been thrown out of the window now. Something tells me the writers didn’t think they would get a second season and it shows.
Apart from TV’s absense over the last few weeks there have also been a distinct lack of games. The games industry is the worst offender for neglecting summer even when a large number of their customers are on their holidays looking for something to burn time on.
At the start of this summer it was a great oppertunity for me to catch up on some of things I missed over the last year. I nailed Oblivion, spent too much time with Civ4, finished Halo 2 at last and got back into Guitar Hero (expert mode baby!) after a long time away. All those weeks ago I didn’t think I would run out of things to play but I have and it’s very weird feeling after being so behind all year.
One look towards the Christmas schedule reveals a mass of games waiting to be played but all coming out within weeks of each other. Lets see what kind of ridiculous list I can come up with:
- Lego Star Wars 2
- Just Cause
- Company of Heroes
- Splinter Cell: Double Agent
- Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
- Gears of War
- Neverwinter Nights 2
Ouch!
The last few weeks have been very dry in these parts. And no I am not referring to the weather, which continues in its randomness, but am talking about games and TV. All the good TV ends before the summer and starts up again in September and it has become much more noticable to me this year because I stay on the US TV schedule more than ever. They really don’t have a clue how to space it out like we do in the UK. Of course there is the arguement that there are less eyeballs on the screen at this time of year, which might be true, but in an age of Tivos this is becoming less important. Last year Battlestar Galactica started in July which is extremely early and it didn’t affect the ratings.
All this squashing of schedules leads to some almost hellish weeks during the start and end of the TV season. I remember earlier this year in January there was an insane week of stuff headlined by four hours of 24 along with Prison Break, Lost, BSG and the usuals. I am missing some out there but those alone are ridiculous and it’s a fore gone conclusion that it will happen again multiple times this season.
There has even been a strange lack of MMA on over the last few weeks only to be totally shattered on Thursday by an awesome UFC show. But before that there had’t been anything on apart from WFA a month prior. Of course there isn’t much to moan about anymore as they are going for another 10 crazy days of programming - why can’t they pace it! We have Fight Night, TUF4 Episode 1, All Access Babalu, UFC 62 Countdown, TUF4 Episode 2, UFC Live and Inside and then the UFC 62 pay per view!
This is all good stuff but I could be watching it nicely spaced out over a number of weeks rather than cramming it all in. Listen networks damn you!
This is great news coming from Microsoft today. Indie developers are going to be given the chance to make their own games for the 360 in an official capacity. We all know the vibrant homebrew scene on the original Xbox led to some awesome apps but this will be the time Microsoft officially recognise it.
From the announcement it seems as though developers will use the SDK to develop and then submit the games online where they can be downloaded. What I don’t understand is how restricted will this be. If ported a SNES emulator over to the 360 for instance would it be blocked by MS? Is it even possible to do this in the first place?
There are a lot on unanswered questions but if Moore really wants this to be the ‘YouTube for games’ then they will have to lower some of the restrictions planned.
Well that didn’t take long..
First interview in after graduating and I got hired at the place I really wanted to work! Great stuff but I don’t think it has sunk in yet. I am gonna be based in Birmingham which is awesome as I really wanted to stay in the city and walk to work which should be possible flat permitting.
Job doesn’t start till next month so I still get my summer break also! I better start flat hunting, ping me a mail or comment if you have anywhere in the city or are looking also.
Wooo!
Wow, check it out (from Meltzer)
Dana White just confirmed to us this morning that he’s gotten verbal agreements to terms from both Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock for a 10/10 fight on a Spike TV special. The show will likely be held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, FL.
Fair play to Dana and those two for sorting this out. It’s a big thank you to all those paying fans who felt they got screwed last time. Do we need the rematch? Definately not on PPV but free TV seems perfect.
