Dipping into Python

Had the urge to start trying out Python this week what with the lack of full time job and all. I was trying to do some HTML parsing and RSS generation in Java and it was proving way too bloated and taking way too long to get where I wanted it to be. What was taking me several days in a language I use regularly and am paid to develop in took mere hours in Python which I hadn’t ever touched.

I think this just proves that there really isn’t one language that works well at everything and anyone who claims so is mad. Where Python really excels is in text and file processing something at which Java, among all it’s many different stream readers and writers, over complicates things.

I am definately going to start using it more for file processing and general ‘application glue’ and maybe look into the web services wing of it (CherryPy and Cheetah) as it seems a great alternative to traditional PHP also.

Valve’s Portal = Prey on Acid

portal46Gamespot have the trailer (also here) for Portal up for download and it looks pretty crazy. It takes the idea of portals used well in Prey and takes them to a whole new level allowing you to totally manipulate them using some kind of portal gun. It appears you shoot entry and exit points onto walls and then those points are spatially linked in the world.

Of course this leads to some extremely mad results such as falling forever (portal on floor and ceiling) and the ability to suck objects in and make them appear out of anywhere, on enemies if needst be.

It looks like a hell of a lot of fun and I do like the way Valve seem to be building on the gravity gun and building more physics orientated gameplay. Lets face it Source is awesome for physics, one look at Gary’s mod show us that. Portal looks like it can deliver whacky gameplay by the bucketload.

Buzz Around New Microsoft iPod Killer Zune

If the buzz around the new Microsoft iPod competitor strangely named Zune is true then we could see the player out by next year. The specs seems pretty tasty (aside from the 30 gig drive) but most of the speculation centres around the possibilities of a WiFi connection. The possibilities of streaming media, Live Anywhere and just hands down wire free file transfer would make it a very atractive alternative.

It’s about time the iPod had some legitimate competition and with Apple’s lack of new models this year it may be the perfect for Microsoft to strike.

Crazy Fines from Unite

I’ve uploaded scans (click the thumbnails below) of the document Unite uses to base it’s fines on once people check out of their flats. I got charged for deep cleaning the bathroom (¬£12) and cleaning the fridge/freezer (¬£15) the later of which is ridiculous because they sent a whole team of Polish dudes in to clean it during the last week.

More funny though are the other charges. Apparently a crappy chest of drawers is worth ¬£140 and a chair that wouldn’t look out of place in a scrap yard is worth ¬£85. There are plenty of amusing ones on there so take a look below.

IT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR FROM MY OLD FLATMATES ON THIS ONE. PLEASE COMMENT.

Graduated today! Woohoo!

Watch out world.

UFC PPV Buyrates

MMA Weekly have the best article I have seen on the explosion in UFC’s pay per view buy rates over the last year. It’s truely incredible how much it has expanded and it just proves that the national TV exposure was all they needed to hook the masses into such a compelling sport and product.

Half-Life 2 Episode 2 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3

Well we just had a raft of announcements on the future of Half-Life from Valve. It includes the return of Team Fortress 2 and the simultaneous release of Episode 2 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. It’s interesting for such a PC focused developer to suddenly bring their next gen console ports into the same release schedule as their main platform. Also, the episodic nature of the series means that it is best delivered on Steam or Xbox Live but as of yet the PS3 does not have a firm infrastructure to do this.

Episode 2

With this as the case I highly doubt we will be seeing a downloadable version of Episode 2 on the PS3 on launch day due to the untested and unproven nature of Sony’s online service. Instead we would only see a retail release at a budget price (ala Episode 1) making it the cheapest PS3 game around.

With the extension of support to these other platforms and the addition of TF2 and Portal (crazy Prey style game) to Valve’s development schedule I can definitely see Episode 2 slipping into 2007. I hope they prove me wrong but as it has been proven in the past Valve will keep working till it’s done and all this extra work can’t help. Wish I could start preloading now.

UFC 61 Roundup

Well that was a crappy show. What more can be said. Tito vs Ken needed to be stopped as Shamrock wasn’t doing a damn thing to defend himself. Sylvia vs Arlovski was two guys who probablly respect each other too much now and really Arlovski didn’t do enough to win the title.

The one promising thing that did come out of the show was the potential of Liddell vs Silva if Chuck can get through Babalu next. Amazing dream match stuff it is but it brings up more questions than answers about Silva’s status with the UFC. FightOpinion has the best article on it I have seen.

Stop Using Office Now

It’s official, they did it at the last minute but in some way you will be able to open those OpenDocument format files in Office 2007. This is real good news for open source and it shows what I good job ODF’s backers did in getting many governments to adopt it.

What a great time to start using OpenOffice, version 2.0.3 came out last week. Get it here.

Why Oblivion Changes Everything

Sometimes a game comes along and you wonder why everyone else isn’t doing the same thing. This past week I have finally been able to clock in some hours on the masterpiece that is Oblivion on my brand spanking new computer and boy was it worth the upgrade.

It has been out for many months now so I am treading on well known ground but it really is a leap beyond the competition. It has that kind of emergent gameplay that has been much talked about but never been truely delivered until now. I can think of numerous tales of my adventures in Oblivion and the manner in which I undertook and achieved them will be different from anyone else who has played the game.

oblivion

I think it’s clear a number of different technologies and ideas have been brought together and have really blown open the flood gates of gameplay possibilities.

Radiant AI has given every character and creature in the world a purpose in life which they carry out in the best way they can. They have jobs, they have homes (or not if your a beggar). They have wants and needs whether that be eating, sleeping or social interaction. It takes the sandbox level AI seen in The Sims and puts it to good use in a genre that didn’t have it before.

A Persistant World means that the actions you take are permanent and have consequences even if you reload the level. You kill a character and they are gone for good, along with the consequences of their existance in the world.

Fast Travel is key. One of the biggest complaints of Morrowind was the travelling time, something which I agree with - why retread a well worn, well documented path over and over. Fast travel allows you to revisit areas already discovered on your map. This may not seem revolutionary but with large areas of the map undocumented and the addition of horse travel it makes those times when you need to explore all the more special rather than tedious.

Graphically Outstanding as everyone knows. As my bank balance knows.

Freeform Gameplay is king. A side quest here, a side quest there, an underground secret cult here, a love triangle there. 30 hours in and who needs the “main” quest when there is so much more interesting stuff to discover if you travel off the beaten path.

When I think about all the RPGs coming soon I realise they will all pale in comparison as this is what RPG is all about. Morrowind was part way there but they really nailed it this time in the post GTA era. Long live the king.
