**Fixed** Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT Video Hardware Overlay Problem

UPDATE (6/7/06@2:10am)

Holy crap I finally fixed it! If you are having this issue on the Extreme Edition XFX cards or any other manufacturer OC’d card just underclock it to 450Mhz on the core and 600Mhz on the memory. If you can’t see the frequency settings in your control panel you need to download the CoolBits registry hack to make it appear. I literally just got this working so I need to tweak it some more but it seems to be an issue that can be fixed by future driver updates. So until the next version comes out we will have to run with slower cores.

I’m just so damn happy I don’t have to RMA right now :-).

END OF UPDATE

Been a bit busy as of late working (Java part time) and building PCs. Got all my components together over the weeknd and had a whale of a time trying to get it to work. Suffice to say, 2 power supplies later and trying every different RAM combination under the sun and it now works. For the record if your getting random hard resets it’s either you power supply or in my case the RAM isn’t in the right slots. It just so happens on this motherboard the first two slots were screwed but the second were fine. Shame it took me two days to figure that out - natch.

I am very happy with the system apart from one issue which is driving me nuts. For some bizzare reason I cannot for the life of me get hardware overlay on my graphics card to work. I am running a GeForce 7900 GT with the AM2 4000 X2 chip on an Asus M2N32 mobo.

I am using the latest 91.31 ForceWare drivers and have even reninstalled Windows from scratch a few times to see if I had installed something which broke it and as it turns out I did not. So right now all videos are playing back under software mode which means horiztonal tearing and no DigiTV at all which is my biggest gripe.

I have searched high and low and no one seems to have a fix for this. As such theres another £20 bounty on this one.

I want my overlay back dammit!

hay thought id look into this problem for u a little and not just for the ¬£20 lol, yes i know im up past my bed time lol but just got in from the pub and the red bull is keepin me awake… anyways u know the spec of the machine im running atm as I just posted it earlier, and I must admit that the overlay feature is wrking just fine on mine. Im using the Nvidia drivers that came with the 512mb Gainward 7900GT which is version 84.21 although I am unable to get a picture on my 32inch HDTV so im sending the TV back to ebuyer… best thing I can advise is roll back to maybe the same 84.21 drivers im using and try that. the only other thing it can be is ur graphics card? maybe its faulty? send it back like I did the 7800GT and upgrade to a different chip and brand say either XFX or POINT OF VIEW 7900GTX

  2. 2 John Griffin

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried rolling back and it didn’t seem to have an effect. I may do it again and fiddle around a bit more when I have time. Could the graphics card really be faulty? I’d assume everything would be broken if it were that. If all else fails I may call overclockers and see if I can RMA it.

  3. 3 Gregg

well the problem is that even though the card is performing in all areas as you expected it could be that the card you have may have a technical fault that is tripping it out. If there is no logical explanation for it not doing overlaying then you have to ‘fault find’ and seeing as its only the graphics card that handles the overlaying then replace it. my strongest advise to you is contact overclockers anyway and log the fault so they have a record of it (hopefuly you brought less than 28 days ago, this just makes it easyier to get a refund/replacement) if it was over 28 days ago then they will say that they can only replace it not refund, if this is the case (im sure you want a replacement anyway) make sure that you tell them your concerns and that you’d like to slightly upgrade to a higher chip, even if it cost a few quid more, just to make sure that this go smooth and go to another brand like i mentioned before this way you covering all your bases in regards to something like a faulty batch? say the **BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-018-BG)** or **Gainward BLISS Geforce 7900 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-028-GW)** as I said im running the 512mb version and works a treat. 1 thing I would say to watch for is returning the card to overclockers is that if they dont find a fault they ‘could’ start charging postage and return ur old card so… when you call them say that 1 of the things that do a fair amount of the time is use overlaying and have tried all sorts from rolling back drivers to re-installing XP and with no success and as such your confident that in your opinion that its the card at fault inside your machine. this way if they test it and works fine for them doesnt mean it’ll work fine for you on your machine, it could be an incompatibilty with something inside your computer so who cares if it works for them!? lol hope that makes sense?

  4. 4 Gregg

    sorry thought you had a 7800GT while I wrote that. try **Gainward BLISS Geforce 7900 GTX 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-029-GW)** or **BFG GeForce 7900 GTX OC 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-017-BG)** you could always go the whole 9-yards with something like **Leadtek GeForce 7950 GX2 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-086-LT)**

I just called overclockers and they issued an RMA for the card. I explained that it could be a conflict with my hardware setup but they said they would still return it to me if it worked on their test rig. Now I’m screwed because I’m pretty sure it will pass their tests.

  6. 6 Gregg

did you buy all the stuff in your new machine from them? if so then they r responsible for the hardware working together as it should, if there is a conflict then overclockers r liable for miss-selling you hardware stating that it could do X,Y & Z but when all plugged to gether it only does X & Y… if on the other hand your new upgrade wasnt brought from them (most of it anyways say the mobo, processor, ram that sorta thing) then you could struggle. at the end of the day they seel an iteam saying it will perform and do this that n the other, if it doesnt do that for u, seeing as your the customer/end user of the hardware, then its of no relivence if it works for them or not. have a word with your local trading standards for their point of view.
If overlancing isnt that important and the card runs everything else fine keep it if u can put up with it and save the ‘potentional’ hassel. u could always borrow a mates card and see what happens then before u RMA the card

  7. 7 Gregg

PS. if you brought it less than 28days ago then I understand that your well within your rights for a refund or exchange if your unhappy with the product or in YOUR opinion it doesn’t perform the way it should

  8. 8 Gregg

    lol… *overlaying

  9. 9 John Griffin

The 28 days thing is true but by just putting two items in my shopping basket in the site and buying them doesn’t guarantee compatibility on overclockers part.

I am having difficulties finding another card to test so I may just have to take the plunge and see what happens.

  10. 10 Rico

I’m having the same issue with my 6200 low midrange card. I recently installed 91.31 on both my rig with the 6200, which is my media machine, and my gaming rig, with a 6800GT. The 6800GT is working fine - that is to say, the video is fine. I’m having some issues with the Source engine, but video plays back fine. On the 6200 rig, video won’t play at all, unless I turn off hardware acceleration, but then the video’s a little choppy. I don’t get it. Is nVidia just releasing beta drivers now?

  11. 11 Rico

So I went into the driver properties on both machines and just rolled back the drivers. Everything’s hunky-dory for now, but I’m curious as to the “beta” nature of 91.31…

  12. 12 John Griffin

Glad the rollback worked for you, no such luck here. The 91.31s do seem to have a ton of problems even though it’s out of official beta now.

  13. 13 John Griffin

Check out the updated post, I bloody fixed it! Was literally about to order another card.

  14. 14 Gregg

well slap me with a stick… im impressed that you managed to get it working by trying something so obscure! Mind you im sure uderclocking an XFX of all makes Extrem Edition card to such a low clock, am I correct saying the factory settings for a XFX 7900GT Extrem Edition is 520mhz on the core and 750mhz/1500mhz on the memory???
well I do hope that the next version sorts it correctly cos it does sound like an issue with that type of card but thats a HUGE drop :-S mines running a treat at 550mhz core and 700mhz/1400mhz memory and that dont matter what version im running. well done anyways

  15. 15 John Griffin

I know it’s a hit in performance Gregg but it’s just down to the base 7900gt level, the level the card is at before it gets the manufacturer’s overclock. The numbers you have are right.

I have spoken to others with the problem and to XFX and I am pretty confident this is a software level problem that can be fixed. So be assured I will be OVERclocking massively when working drivers are released :-).

This may be a bit out of date, but here: http://www.tweaksrus.com - get Your drivers here, these should work. For example, when I bough my 6600 GT (for AGP) it had serious DOOM3 problems (lagging extremely and sometimes locking up on video playback, like PDA records etc.). Installed the TweaksRUs driver and not only did it resolve the issue, it also boosted my framerate up by about 8-10 FPS. And that’s a T.R.E.A.T. ;) So, I guess You DO get a free lunch sometimes… ;-)

Best regards. :) Email me if it works out for Ya (reset the default speeds of course).

  17. 17 Mark

I came across this site when I was looking for a solution to my GeForce 7800 GTX problem. I’m trying to run Maya, and I’ve got it running somewhat stabily. Problem is that I’ve never dealt with over/under clocking issues before, and as such, I can’t seem to set it to an underclock setting that will take. Glad you got your card working. Any advice?

  18. 18 John Griffin

Well the issue I have solved here is one that occurs on cards with manufacturer’s overclock and the 91.31 or 91.33 drivers. Find out if your card is overclocked at retail and if it is you should reduce the speed to the lowest card in the range (which can be found on the manufacturer’s website).

    Hello to all

My story is with 4 day with BFG 7900GT OC

I sell my 6800GT with agp for the new 7900GT… nice

I buy 7900GT OC from BFG from a local shop… with 3 year warranties. :)
All games run very nice on new card, even I test the OC from autodetect settings from driver… this set my card to 544/1600 from 475/1360, I run 3dmark 05 nice…and 06 with no problem (8249 in 05, 4643 in 06 by default and overclock score 9230 in 05)

afther that I set the card by default and I play BF2

2 more days and the screen have red, gren and gry dotts in BF2, and same strange texture from the all the trees. I eraze all windows partion and I install from zero all

again same things more grups of dotts and strage simtoms for every refresh set

I take the card and I go to a friend I test in his big sistem same things… dotts and a strage “gry snow” over the desktop and in any aplication.

I go with the card to shop from were I got…. ” sorry but if you want to wait about 30 working days for the card to go to RMA… , no money back, or we can give a leadtek card same 7900GT but with a new big cooler”. I want bfg… but i dont want to wait…and for that … i have now leadtek. work ok now but it is not that i want in frist place….

I mention that I live and work in ROMANIA

    Your the man!

Nobody i’ve spoken too on this exact same problem had a solution.

Had to change to Classic Control Panel, then underclocked the card and BAM, DigiTV started working (Which means it can now access the hardware Overlay).

    Thanks mate.
    Anim

  21. 21 Anim

BTW, I have a 7900GS Card. Core was 600, Memory was 1,500 before making your change.

  22. 22 John Griffin

Thanks for the confirmation Anim. I am still running this hack after 6 months, can’t believe they haven’t fixed it.

    Hello everyone

Im trying to findout whats is wrong with my Gforce 7900. I have a gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R with 3gB intel core duo 4gb ram and this is the problem: I get a black screen while my pc is running and seems that this happen everytime the gpu fun starts running. At first I foundout that I had the motherboard set on PCi instead of PCIe and the problem was fixed for about 2 days once I change it then just start happening again. I had conducted PNY and had returned the card and they send me another one (supposed to be a diffrent card).I had the same problem I call and talked to PNY tech and said that possible to be my power supply problem and Igot a new one. No luck there, now I open a new ticket with PNY and ask me to send the card back again but I would like to try and figureout if there is anything else to check b4 I send it back for the 2nd time.

Any help will be nice and I thank u in advance
