UFC 60 Thoughts

QUICK RANT AT UFC: Change the bloody opening sequence with the gladiator and crappy music - it’s years old and I’m sick of it. Now your raking in the big bucks you can afford to up the production values slightly, hell, you have done it on the TV shows and people aren’t paying $40 to see them. END OF QUICK RANT AT UFC.

Man that was one heck of a good PPV. Considering this show was built around one single fight my expectations were fairly low but they delivered and then some. Only one fight went to a decision and that got really entertaining at the end as it was a two minute piggy back ride.

Again this month we saw more awesome light weight fights but that division is desperately lacking a title for those guys to aim for. Can’t Dana “I’m not a dickhead” White line up some tourney or something? There are at least four guys I can think of off the top of my head who have a legitimate shot and thats more than I can say for the heavyweight or even light-heavyweight divisions.

What did strike me though was the number of casual fans in attendence who seemed to have no clue that Gracie could lose and were booing Hughes like crazy. Well Matt showed them! How on Earth they could discount the man who is on top of the most competetive weight division in MMA today is beyond me. I was very pleased it ended in the first round because going into it I was dreading a potential three round decision victory for Hughes but thankfully he wasn’t afraid to go into his guard and take it to the ground against the legend.

All in all an excellent show and a good first outing in at the Staples Center in LA. OMG have you seen the schedule for next month!? Three live UFC events in three weeks! I shit you not.

In response to your rant, i actually quite like it being the same every time - thats what you get on tv shows etc, why should this be any different?!
I agree - was a great show! I really dont know how Gracie avoided submitting to that arm bar - that looked nasty!!

I got a lot of comments on my blog from people who think (thought) that Royce was unbeatable. I think these are the same people who watched UFC at its inception, saw Royce kick ass, and then hadn’t watched UFC until last weekend.

As sad as I was to see Royce get pummelled, I’m guessing that the event brought a lot of old UFC fans (casual fans) back to see what’s been going in on the past 5-6 years. It’s an exciting time for MMA, and I get the feeling that things are about to blow up. Lightweight titles are probably coming up very soon :)

Yeh it’s definately going to be interesting to see the buy rate this show gets. With all those old fans coming back for Royce added to the new TUF generation fans it should out do Randy Chuck 3 (400,000 buys I think). It was certainly a great show all round so I wouldn’t be suprised if many stick around for UFC 61.

Dont you think it looked like Royce took a dive???? Here’s a guy that has been doing Jiu-jitsu for over 30 yrs. To even assume Hughes would know a tenth of what Royce knows would be an insult. Royce must know at least 10 escapes from the side mount and ten from the rear mount yet he tried……….NONE????? Something stinks in the state of the UFC!

Well Gary I think you just proved Monkey’s point about the number of people who believe Royce is invincible. Not to take anything from his accomplishments, he is undoubtedly a legend, but the fact is a top level UFC fighter today has far more capabilities than one from 10 years ago. Put Royce in with most of these guys and it would be the same result.

You can come up with as many excuses as you like but the game has evolved beyond him, period.

I believe part of what you are saying John. I believe that the game has evolved. However to see Royce not even attempt an escape. Do you get what I am saying? I have fought 16 fights and I have never been dominated in a such a fashion that I at least did not TRY!!! to escape. I think it just looked very fishy! I appreciate your comments John.

One thing that has been proven over and over is that Matt Hughes is one of the most powerful guys in MMA. With Hughes in the dominating position on his back in full control there was no way of escaping.

Side control is open for debate. But I am sure if Royce could have over powered him or had the opportunity to escape he would have taken it. It probablly just comes down to power again.

If you are suggesting this is a worked MMA fight you are mistaken.
