I think Andy raises some interesting points about Pride in comparison to UFC. I agree that UFC build their fights up better than Pride do on the show itself but if you read the MMA news and know the history of the fighters involved it can be just as interesting.
UFC overall is a far better product with entertaining pre-match builds and slicker presentation and feel of the entire show. This is because it’s live, most of the fighters speak English and there isn’t the huge culture gap that any Japanese production brings.
Pride do have a far better heavyweight divison with Fedor, Crocop and Hunt but UFC out classes them with welterweights such as Hughes, Penn and St.Pierre. And you know with UFC that the refereeing and judging of fights is way more down the middle than Pride where you can’t help feeling some of the officials are watching different fights.
The Ultimate Fighter has also helped to get the personalities of the fighters accross which they had always struggled to do before. To say my hopes are high for the Shamrock and Ortiz fued in season three would be a huge understatement.
So UFC is easily the best overall but for the MMA addicts who need more and maybe want to see better heavyweights Pride is an occasional entertaining diversion.

Good and valid comments. I totally agree with you on the referee and officials comments. There is just NO WAY a gaijin/foreign fighter could ever win against a Japanese fighter on the scorecards/judges decision. I think there is that racist element still alive in modern-day Japan.

The ufc is the big show. I belive that pride has better fighters. ButI still enjoy the ufc more because they introduce you to the fighters more. And I do like the octagon more than the ring. Pride I belive has tougher guys but it lacks personality and I belive thats what makes pride less popular. Also ufc all acess and ultimate fighter on spike helps the ufc as well. I disagree completely Dave. Neither organisation can claim they have better fighters overall but within the different weight classes there are huge differences. There is no question Pride’s heavyweight division eclipses the UFC’s but on the same hand just look at the welterweights.
If you want to dig up old losses of fighters we could do that all day, hell Tito Ortiz beat Wanderlei Silva back in the day on a UFC show. The fact is that they are very different products that cater to very different audiences and they are both good in their own right. Certainly not the amateur/pro comparison you suggest, are you calling Matt Hughes an amateur? I thought not.
I wouldn’t say that UFC fighters are “amateurs” and that the Pride fighters are “pros”, (as Dave suggested), but I will agree to the fact that Pride fighters are more entertaining and their heavyweight division is scary…I can’t wait for the Fedor-Crocop rematch and for any of you who haven’t seen any Pride fights, just type in Fedor Emelianko or Mirko Crocop into a search engine, or into http://www.youtube.com….those fighter’s converted me to Pride fighting over UFC.
Pride is the best overall, but because of UFC’s welterweight division, I love both Pride and UFC together. But if I had to choose one or the other it would be Pride for many reasons.
If Pride organizers had proper American marketing skills, as opposed to the Japanese version….I believe that Pride fighting would surpass UFC by far…UFC has the welterweights that host awesome fights, but Pride has more world viewers worldwide and no event should not be missed by anyone…also Pride fight tournaments are many times continous, so the fighters have to not only think about winning the fight, but they have to conserve enough energy for the next fight which happens in the same night.
Anyways, I can go on and on, but the end result is that Pride is much better than UFC, but it would be nice if the UFC welterweight fights were included. If anyone hasn’t seen Fedor vs Crocop….check out this link…

I’m kind of losing respect for the UFC because I personally know a couple guys who have got to fight on the Ultimate Fight Night and they’re one dimensional and mediocer at best.
I definitely think overall, pride has better fighters. Other than the welterweight division (Matt Hughes, BJ Penn), I don’t think the UFC fighters would do well in the other weight classes. If you look at relatively recent few years of how the ufc fighters have faired when coming to pride, they haven’t done very well (for the most part). Look what happened to Jens Pulver (lightweight ufc champ) when he came to pride, he got knocked out by Takanori Gomi and ended up with an unimpressive record (2 wins 2 losses). Look at Phil Baroni when he came to pride, he has only a 3 win 2 loss record and was recently schooled in his last fight by a mediocre albeit smart fighter (Kazuo Misaki). Look at what happened to Chuck Liddell when he came to pride, a 2-1 record and got his ass beat by Rampage (the body punches on the ground were absolutely vicious). Josh Barnett is doing well in pride though 4-3 record and has beaten some good fighters (Mark Hunt, Nogueira, Alexander Emelienko) and his 3 losses have all been to the same man, Crocop (Barnett’s one of my favorite fighters, his after fight interviews are HILARIOUS, plus he like anime). Then look at what happened when Anderson Silva (a 3-2 fighter in pride, and had lost his last 2 fights in pride) came to the ufc. He has a 2-0 record and is now the champ!!! Both his wins were by decisive knockout and this from a guy whose standup I don’t think is really very good. When he fought Ryo Chonan in his last pride fight, he was barely winning the standup fight against a guy whose standup sucks. Ryo Chonan’s stand up is pretty bad and still he was giving just as good as he was taking. Other than Matt Hughes (who i think could do VERY well in pride) and maybe, maybe Chuck Lidell, I don’t think the other fighters in ufc have much of a chance getting the championship belt in their respective weightclasses in pride (i don’t think chuck would either, but he has a decent shot). The pride fighters however, would have a much better chance of getting the championship belt in their respective weightclasses in ufc (except in Matt Hughes’ weight). Fedor or Crocop would easily win the belt, Takanori Gomi or Kawajiri or Ishida (heck, a lot of the lightweights in pride could beat the best ufc lightweights) would easily win the belt, Wanderlei or Rampage could win belt, etc… The general level of competition just seems better in pride (except in welterweight).

I love Liddell but he is a bit overrated. His big wins are against Couture, Ortiz, Babalu, Horn and White (who has a rep for getting an asswhopping). All of these are good fighters on the ground. With the exception of White who doesn’t seem to win anything anywhere. Liddells takedown defense neutralizes these guys games. When Chuck is against good strikers he faulters. Rampage dominated him. He won over Belfort in decision but Belfort actually had control at points. Even Courtue who isn’t really known for striking was winning the standup with Liddell in the first fight. If Liddell went against a really good striker in Pride I don’t think it would be any different than his Rampage fight.
I dont see how everybody underestimates Silva anyways. Because he was beat by Ortiz what eight years ago? Silva’s takedown defense wasn’t that impressive then. A lot can change in 8 years. The man beat Rampage what three times? And Rampage is a damn good wrestler.

all the talk makes me sick. who cares about rescent fights. we can go on all day over that. bottom line is that both ufc and pride are the big time of mma. heavyweight goes to pride hands down, light heavyweight is a toss up, middleweight is a toss up(pride may may be deeper), welter weight goes to ufc hands down and now with the new lightweight division in ufc i think it is a toss up too.(the reason i say that is cause sherk is a stud but pride may be deeper) so whether you like one or the other give me a break on trying to prove who’s the best. they both kick ass.
The imminent Wandeli Silva vs. Chuck Liddell fight should be interesting….anything can happen. Dana White predicted that Liddell would knock out Quinton Jackson when they fought in Pride. However, the reality is that the Liddell camp threw in the towel. …anything can happen….

Look, I think Pride is the Best. I respect UFC, but I love Pride. But I think both organizations are incredible. But Pride is my favorite. I just love the Spectacle of Pride Events, they’re incredible. I agree maybe the crowds are less loud than UFC crowds, but they make up for it in the Spectacle of the event in Pride.
But both organizations are good. It’s good to have this rivalry, it keeps the 2 organizations on their toes.
Also, the Pride Crowds applaud and let the Fighters know when they’re doing good. They show respect. I’m disappointed that Quinton disrespected Pride when he said in Pride you can hear a pin drop. The Pride crowds get their point across and applaud Awesomely and incredibly too.

Is it just me or is Pride taking over the UFC? Doesn’t really surprise me or anything since Pride definitely has all the dominant fighters but it doesn’t seem like any of them are having much trouble beating everyone in the UFC up. I mean the UFC has some good athletes but that’s just it, they all seem to be wrestlers that have learned a couple BJJ moves or a Football player that learned how to throw a punch and not actual mma fighters. Most people in the US didn’t even know fighters like Cro Cop and Rampage until they were blown up on TV, what’s funny is that 2 months ago I bet every single person that has been tricked into thinking Liddel is the baddest guy on earth would’ve bet the farm that he could beat Rampage, I wonder how many of them would still make that bet? Will they all stick with Tim Silvia when Cro Cop destroys him or will they all pretend like they were Cro Cop fans from the start? UFC also seems to be made for TV and they don’t let the fighters utilize all of their skills(i.e.no kicks or knees to the head while your opponent is on the ground) like Pride does. In Pride you can also have a 160lb guy fighting a 300lb guy which is another reason the Pride fighters are dominant over their counter parts(think you’ll ever see Jens Pulver fighting Andre Arlovski?). Just hope Pride doesn’t let all their stars go to the UFC and start hiring a bunch of washed up fighters.

i dont know who some of these people are kidding, but pride is the big time. ufc is getting better but most are still no match for a world class pride fighter. ufc fighters are mostly american “mma” style fighters, with no genuine discipline behind them. they train to fight in mma as opposed to getting real training for a specific style. watch what happens when crocop and rampage fight again in ufc. they each can take the heavyweight and light heavyweight belts whenever they want to, its almost a joke making them “earn” a title shot. theres no one in ufc who can beat crocop and hes gonna make the ufc heavyweight division look like children. even when werdum makes his debut in ufc hes gonna school whatever chump they throw at him. and is it just me or when people get owned in pride, they give up and go to ufc and somehow get a belt? i could go on all day. pride is better, hands down.

May we have a moment of silence for Cro Cop. All of the chatter on Pride being the best has to pause. Cro Cop’s loss last night was one of the worst beatings I have ever seen. I just don’t think you can make the case that Pride is superiour to UFC anymore. Pride’s #2 or #3 fighter was owned. I love Cro Cop… it was a shame to seem him lose so bad. Pride has much better entrances compared to the UFC, their event was held in the Tokyo dome several times, their highest number of spectators for the fight itself, not counting the broadcast exceeded 90 thousand. How can anyone say that UFC is better than pride? It’s not even comparable. Pride has fighters coming in from all over the world, and they pay their fighters so much more. Granted that the UFC is growing really fast, it still hasn’t reached the level Pride has gained through the decade.
