Keep Your Food Safe

I should have had some of these during my first year at uni, if you bought good food it would always mysteriously go missing. Now I just need a lock for my cheeses :-).

Wireless USB Adapters in Ubuntu

I got so sick and tired of trying to get my USB wifi adapter to work in Ubuntu that I gave up and ordered a Linkysys WRT54GS that can be used as a bridge (with hacked firmware). Of course a few hours after ordering I got the thing working!! If you install the latest ndiswrapper it works great with Windows XP drivers, I followed this guide to nail it all down. The router will come in handy for some other projects I have lined up though, can you say "a cup of internet"?

Thanks Dave

I listened to Dave’s Morning Coffee Notes where he explains what happend between him and Adam over Podshow. If Adam knowingly lied to him about going into business then that’s not cool and I would really like to hear what he has to say about that. It seems like Dave and Ron never got on and it was going to be one or the other who would become partners with Curry - not both. Unfortunately a verbal agreement on Dave’s side was not enough to secure a deal as Ron Bloom had already managed to put a wall between the two of them. It would be nice if they could patch things up as it would be great for the entire podcasting community, whether or not Dave is willing to forgive though remains to be seen.

PGP in Thunderbird

mozilla.gifMatt is moaning about Thunderbird’s support for PGP. Ok firstly that chat log was dated back from 2001 before Thunderbird even existed and secondly there is an excellent extension with full GnuPG/OpenPGP support available called Enigmail (since 3/15/2001). Get off your high horse and search on Google before bashing outstanding open source projects like this. Please, I encourage you to use Outlook Express and enjoy the pleasures of a bug ridden, virus laden and highly exploitable pile of crap.

Mono + Ubuntu Live = Mono Live

mono-logo.pngJust what I was looking for, a Linux live CD with everything I need to develop mono applications! And it’s Ubuntu based - woohoo!

Burning Sabres

I want this tape.

Late but Inevitable Star Wars Thoughts

Haven’t blogged for a few days, been back home and didn’t find the time. Saw Star Wars Thursday night and man it was good. It was rammed in Star City, something that doesn’t happen to often given the size of the place, so it was a good job I had tickets booked and we were there early. Personally I thought the film was awesome, a non stop romp through the Star Wars universe with a power and presence that the other prequels lacked. Many critics have slated the poor pacing and generally bad directing in the movie but when I was in there I didn’t notice it one bit. The sheer epic scale of what was happening and the fact my presumptions and predictions about what happened between episodes two and four were finally materialising on the screen made it intensely exciting. Seeing Anakin’s fall and the way he is transformed into Vader was something I had waited so long to see that perhaps I enjoyed it on a different level to what the critics were describing.

Anyway, back to Lego Star Wars :-)

More on Revolution Tomorrow?

Big thanks to Andy for pointing this out. There may be more info about the Revolution revealed at E3 tomorrow on day two of the show, if they do it’s going to shock everyone especially after the lack of detail yesterday. I just watched the fan created video over at IGN and the mention of brain in the clip bears a striking resemblance to what Reggie was saying yesterday about the ‘right brain’. If this is true and Nintendo are returning to VR with a new approach then I will buy one on day of release - no question.

Audioslave - Out Of Exile

B0009GIAQQ.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

  1. Your Time Has Come - Couldn’t get my speakers any louder for this one. The riff master is back!
  2. Out Of Exile - Seriously funky and an awesome solo.
  3. Be Youself - Heard before and can already play it, great tune. Got to love the whammy.
  4. Doesn’t Remind Me - Starts slow but not long till they get to a drool inducing solo.
  5. Drown Me Slowly - Faster pacing and more screachy than normal (good thing), awesome bass at the two minute mark.
  6. Heavens Dead - Very melodic but still a nice crunchy guitar.
  7. The Worm - Very Zeppelin esque verses.
  8. Man Or Animal - Great drum rolls, scratch tastic and a crazy ass solo.
  9. Yesterday to Tomorrow - Good
  10. Dandelion - Slower song with great bridge
  11. Number 1 Zero - Slowing it down even more building up to some cool metal.
  12. The Curse - Soundgarden-ish chords. Good lyrically.

This is an improvement on the last album for one clear reason. Last time it sounded like Morrello was a bit restricted compared to his Rage days but this time arround he goes off into crazy solos with pleanty of whammy and there are some dead funky riffs in there. This also has the trademark Audioslave slower songs still in the right ammount - as much as some of us would like they are not trying to be Rage. Overall it starts off hard and funky slows down towards the end, I’m buying this one.

Console Triple Threat

ps3.jpg 360.jpgrev.jpggbm.jpg

I watched the three pre E3 press conferences today (another busy day i know) and here are my immediate thoughts.

Sony

  • Don’t like the look of PS3, kinda bloaty.
  • I like that they are sticking to standards - USB, 802.11g, Bluetooth, SD, Compact Flash. Yes this is Sony we are talking about, I almost had a heart attack when they didn’t invent or use their own proprietary versions of each of these technologies.
  • Control pad is a bad move. From many years of working in a games store I can tell you people liked their old Dual Shock pad, don’t get me wrong I’m all for innovation but this just looks like a cheap 3rd party knock off.
  • Killzone: WOW! Ok if that is not pre rendered I will eat my hat, it looked incredible and although the original stank this one could be a winner.
  • Blue ray support is bad because it’s not a ratified standard and costs more to manufacture (drives and media). It simply isn’t necessary this generation which just goes to show Sony are going to use this as a vehicle to try and push it ahead of HD-DVD. The scent of burning betamax tapes is in the air again.
  • This will easily be the most powerful next gen console and will have the best looking games as they have tried to cram as much raw power in there as possible. I would like to see a price for this thing.

Microsoft

  • J Allard is really starting to annoy me, he is clearly trying way to hard to be cool…ahem…hoody over a suit!
  • Could you hear the sigh of relief when they said it was backwards compatible? Curse you for teasing us!
  • I like the console’s exterior, it’s far more eye pleasing than the PS3.
  • The software that holds all this together is fantastic and the media center component is identical to the interface on MCPCs.
  • No Perfect Dark footage yet but the dude from Square showed up to announce Final Fantasy XI, he must have just come from the Sony presentation.

Nintendo

  • It seemed Nintendo had been forced into showing something this year due to pressure from MS and Sony. So it left me very underwhelmed when the Revolution was shown but none of it’s specs were revealed.
  • I like the backwards compatibility idea of being able to play their entire back catalogue on there - very cool. I’m guessing this doesn’t extend to third party games so no GoldenEye.
  • Love the Game Boy micro, the screen is excellent. Shouldn’t it be Game Boy Advance micro though?
